Vertical Septum Surface Piercing

Hand Piercings, Finger Piercings, and Hand Web piercings are all very rare and rather extreme. In fact, if you are even considering getting one of these piercings, you are truly one of the brave. The pain varies, and in fact usually there is minimal pain involved with the piercing, but the aftercare of these particular piercings is only for the stringent at heart.
Your hands are two of the most active places on your body. They are constantly in motion, they are full of germs, and they are very sensitive (all those nerves running through our hands help the brain process pain, pleasure, and temperatures). A contemporary phenomenon is getting the surfaces on your hands pierced. I'm not against these piercings at all, but more than most piercings, it is important you understand the risks before committing to the piercing.

Hand piercings are all surface piercings, so they are susceptible to the usual suspects - migration and rejection. Your hands are chock full of muscles, tendons, and nerves, so the constant motion of your hands don't exactly work in your favor. Generally, the less disturbed the piercing area, the quicker and more successful the healing. With hand piercings you will not have the luxury keeping a hand "protected". It will be exposed to the elements, germs, daily stresses, and abuses straightaway. For this reason, only get a hand piercing if you are willing to do the following.

First of all, you must clean it religiously. Your piercer will recommend cleaning it somewhere around three times a day with a warm saline solution - don't skip this step! The saline helps keep the piercing site clean and free of buildup. You will have special instructions concerning which soap you can use, what moisturizer you can use, what liquids or gels you can't put on your hands (Neosporin is always a no-no), ad infinitum. Smoking is definitely discouraged with a hand piercing, for the cigarette smoke that will inevitably drift around it will irritate your new piercing and prolong the healing. You must also be sure to keep the piercing site clean, not just from germs, but from dirt, trash, food, etc. Remember, you have a very delicate piercing that is being assaulted from all sides, so be careful!

Your lifestyle may have to change as well during the healing period. Besides not smoking, you shouldn't be wearing gloves (they can tear the piercings out) or engaging in any activity that may put your hands at risk. If your career heavily depends on using your hands, you may want to think about getting one of these piercings extra carefully. Your everyday life will be affected by this piercing for at least a year - which is the general healing time. If you've never had a body piercing before, this probably isn't a good one to start out with!

Now that the risks are known, and you still want to go ahead, here is what you can expect! For starters, don't get pierced with a ring or hoop. You are just begging for it to get ripped out! Your hands touch too many objects everyday and a ring jutting out will get snared on something and it will be gone before you know it. Your piercer and you will decide if surface bars or curved barbells are best for your piercing location (which is largely determined by the shape of your hands, exact location, and lifestyle). It is not uncommon to have to get refitted a couple months after the piercing, for the swelling should have gone down enough to where you might need new jewelry to lie closer to the skin.

For hand piercings, the location can be almost anywhere. Surface bars will almost always be used, and the pain might be a bit intense. Rejection risk is high since there is not a lot of skin or tissue to penetrate, but with care this can be a relatively long term piercing.
Finger piercings generally don't hurt nearly as much as they look, but these too have a high risk of migration. Generally pierced at the base of the finger to look like a ring, surface bars or barbells are used. The finger will swell after piercing, and is highly prone to infection, but by following the right aftercare and being super careful, you just may be able to make this piercing last a good long while.

Hand web piercings might be the most popular of the hand piercings - the webbing between each finger (especially between thumb and forefinger) is very thin and not hard to push a barbell through. It is also prone to rejection and migration, and infection is a very real possibility. This piercing should not affect your mobility (none of these piercings should affect any of your body functions), but the hand webs are major points in acupuncture therapy, so if you talk to an acupuncturist they probably won't be keen on you receiving a piercing this area. There's no western scientific evidence that piercing your hand webs will hurt you, but if you follow eastern medicine and science, you may want to hold off on web piercings.

All in all, piercings on the hand are rather extreme. They require constant care, zealous protection, regular cleaning, and even then it's not a guarantee that these piercings will last. Yet, if you want to push the boundaries and your lifestyle affords it, you can try to get a piercing on your hand. For many people who successfully have them, it's their favorite piercing

Sexy Piercing on Back Body of Girl

Body piercing is when a needle is put through part of the body and then a foreign object is inserted as jewelery. Eventually, the skin around the jewelery heals and a hole is left. The hole is the piercing. It is perfectly safe when done by professionals who are careful.DO NOT pierce your own belly button. The piercing needs to be done with a sterilized needle, gloves and other sterilized pieces of equipment.

Sexy Piercing on Back Body of GirlYou must opt for a parlor with wide range of jewelry so that you can pick up the required piece. But before doing so, you must know what kind of jewelry is safe on your part because there are chances of some metals for causing infections during new belly button piercing. Surgical stainless steel jewelry is preferred. Jewelry made of solid gold, titanium, or niobium may also be used.

Sexy Piercing on Back Body of GirlPut on loose fitting clothes. Tight apparel will irritate the belly button. Take it easy and relax. Often, it is nervousness that causes discomfort. Breathe in a controlled manner. Focus on inhaling and exhaling. Concentrating on your breath (or other objects) will sooth your muscles. This will reduce the pain.

Sexy Piercing on Back Body of GirlThe first and most important thing to keep in mind is that you should not touch your new piercing unless absolutely necessary. It is recommended that people clean navel rings once a day with warm water and antibacterial soap and avoid using any creams or alcohols that will irritate or dry the skin

Sexy Piercing on Back Body of Girl
Sexy Piercing on Back Body of GirlBelly Button piercing has been prevalent for centuries and can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Indians. Body piercing made a statement and stood for their status in society. Many piercings were believed to represent a connection with the Gods. As time evolved, society and the perception of piercing changed, the only accepted piercings were that of the ears of women. The truth be told is that body piercings, especially rings look good.

Belly Button Piercing Rings Are A Popular Fashion Accessory

A tattoo or piercing is a sign in modern society of style and individuality. As with anything, when it becomes fashionable a lot of people jump on the bandwagon and then it becomes less unique. So what are you doing to make your tattoo or piercing decision more original? Do you care? Are you happy to be one of many? The good news is that even if a piercing in terms of where it is located is common, the actual accessory can be very stylish and relatively unique. This brings me on to the subject I want to walk about which is belly button rings.

Belly Button Piercing Rings Are A Popular Fashion AccessoryHave you got one yet? A belly button ring I mean. These are now very popular. At one time it was a piercing that was few and far between but has now reached 'critical mass'. There aren't many that haven't got one or considered having one, at least at some point. Also, really, lets be honest, it's a female thing. Men and belly button rings don't really go hand in hand. As with any piercing, you can be super stylish or you can make it look terrible. Please don't be the latter.

Belly Button Piercing Rings Are A Popular Fashion AccessorySo, having firmly established that the belly button ring is firmly in the female domain of our species, lets also accept they are as common as back tattoos and tongue piercings. That much is a given. There is, however, something alluringly attractive about the naval if it is decorated tastefully, which is where the belly button ring comes into its own. If you choose the right belly button ring it will look exquisitely attractive.

Belly Button Piercing Rings Are A Popular Fashion AccessoryThere are lots of belly button rings available to purchase, and there is a wide variety to be found at great prices out there in cyberspace so have a good look around for the right one. Belly button rings may not be 'as' unique as they were before they became so populare, but you can certainly add your own touch of style and flare to this type of naval adornment and I can't see them going out of fashion anytime soon.

Jewelry Pierccing 2007 Oscar Earrings The All Important Item of Jewelry

Why are earrings the most important item of jewelry? By important I mean the piece of jewelry that will do the most for your appearance. As with all jewelry it should blend with your overall attraction. You don?t want the first comment to be about your great jewelry and then you come in second. Your overall look is what needs to be fabulous, then after the comments of how stunning you look, they can notice your cool jewelry. Later we will look at what style of earrings the stars wore to the Oscars.

Jewelry Pierccing 2007 Oscar Earrings The All Important Item of JewelryEarrings are what frames your face, along with hair, if the colour and style of your earrings are right they will be like two spotlights adding a glow to your face, making it brighter and more alive. Earrings with a decoration on the front of the post, covering the pierced hole, has the reflected light starting from the right point. Earrings with a shepherd hook usually start from a lower aspect and part of the effect can be lost. Also with the shepherd hook if the earring is heavy it shows up the drag on the lobe, these earrings are probably better suited for lighter more casual wear.

Jewelry Pierccing 2007 Oscar Earrings The All Important Item of JewelryLooking at the Oscars 2007. On the Red Carpet almost all of the earrings that the stars wore were decorated from the front of the post, very few were shepherd hook earrings. Most earrings at the Oscars were quite elaborate but not overly so. Some like Nicole Kidman only wore tiny studs. I only saw one star, where the first thing that stood out was her jewelry, the rest were very tasteful.

Jewelry Pierccing 2007 Oscar Earrings The All Important Item of JewelryMore Earrings from the Oscars 2007

Cate Blanchett ? black stone on the lobe with a larger stone dropped from the first

Emily Blunt ? Stud earrings

Gwyneth Paltrow ? Stone on the lobe with a large elaborate diamond shaped drop

Helen Mirren ? Medium button style

Jennifer Hudson ? Long drop earring with the piercing covered

Jennifer Lopez ? Long drop earring with the piercing covered

Nicole Kidman ? Tiny stud

Penelope Cruz ? Large flower shaped button style

Portia de Rossi ? A short drop from a smaller stone on the lobe

Jada Pinkett Smith ? Large diamond shaped drop from a covered piercing

Maggie Gyllenhaal ? A medium retro hoop with a filigree decorated boat at the bottom of the hoop ? piercing was exposed.

Rachel Weisz ? Stud earring

Kate Winslett ? an elaborate button style

My vote goes to Penelope Cruz for making her earrings work for her, there are some photos on my Blog, the link is below, go and leave your comment.

Earrings have a long history and date back to the earliest of times. From ancient countries the earrings recovered have nearly all been a variation of the hoop earring, a style that has remained popular to this day. In Cyprus, from the middle of the 2nd Millennium BC, the popular earrings were painted terracotta in the form of stylised nude females. Earlobes were pierced 2 or 3 times and large terracotta hoops suspended from them.

In Ancient Egypt jewels were an important part of the culture, worn by men, women and children. They also used jewelry to adorn statues. There were various hoop styles among the earrings. Earlobe piercing was evident, and the wearing of very heavy earrings from an early age caused the earlobes to be extremely elongated and deformed.

From the late 4th Century BC, earrings were becoming more elaborate in design. The earrings often had suspended pendants and chains. Filigree, granulation, leaf, rosettes and doves were all used to decorate the boat or lower half of the hoop.

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance earrings were in decline due to the fashion of high collars and a headdress that often covered the ears. It was not until centuries later, about the 1530s that earrings began to emerge again, this was again due to the change in hair and headdress styles. The newly emerging earrings were in the form of plain gold hoops with a pearl drop.

Then in the 17th century earrings started to make a real comeback. By the middle of the 17th century earrings were an essential item. The designs became more complex and interesting. They used ruby, pearls, emeralds and enamel in floral motifs.

18th and 19th centuries saw beautiful and elaborate designs, often using semi-precious stones. They also used diamonds and pearls and very intricate goldsmith techniques.

Early in the 20th century around 1910 to 1930 Art Deco style was popular. At this time ear piercing began to be thought of as barbaric, and clamping earrings to the earlobe with a screw fitting became popular.

1947 saw the feminine new look by Dior. This set the scene for earring design to come to the fore in a new and creative way.

In the 1970s earring design become larger and more varied. The ever popular hoops were back in demand, with many of the hoops decorated with precious gemstones.

In the late 1970s ear piercing started to make a comeback and was popular again. This trend has continued up until today when almost every woman, a large number of men and children have their earlobes pierced once or many times.

Now, as seen at the Oscars, styles are very diverse from studs to shoulder dusters. Fortunately for us we do not have to pay as much for beautiful earrings as the stars do. With today?s technology the quality of man-made gemstones is very good. Resulting in beautiful and much more economical earrings, and other jewelry. Good quality inexpensive jewelry can look as good as the expensive items. For example the cubic zirconia which is made from minerals, resembles the much more expensive diamond. Cubic zirconia is not quite as hard as a diamond but it can be cut and faceted in the same beautiful designs that a diamond can be cut in. Cubic zirconia can be colored to resemble ruby, emerald, sapphire or any other stone. Another cost cutting technique is to quality plate Sterling Silver with 18k Gold. This gives the benefits of gold at a Sterling Silver price. The choice is yours, try all styles and see which does the best for you. Enjoy your earrings and look fabulous.

New California law gets the lead out of piercing jewelry

Hipsters beware: That naval piercing or nose ring may be hazardous to your health.

New California law gets the lead out of piercing jewelryIn rare cases, seizures, organ failure and even death can occur.

New California law gets the lead out of piercing jewelryThat’s the message from the California Department of Toxic Substance Control, which is enforcing a new state law that regulates lead in jewelry, especially piercing jewelry.

New California law gets the lead out of piercing jewelryThat law went into effect March 1.

“Body piercings may be particularly vulnerable to poisoning since lead can enter the bloodstream through the pierced areas,” Maureen Gorsen, director of California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control, said in a written statement.

To get the point across, officials from the department were in Berkeley on Thursday at Zebra Tattoo & Body Piercing shop to spread the word that jewelry must have less than 10 percent lead as of March 1 and less than 6 percent by Aug. 30, 2009.

If they violate the new law, they can face fines of up to $2,500 a day for each piece in their possession.

Kerrie Naslund, 34, a senior piercer at Zebra for 16 years, said she is confident her shop is lead-free because it gets most of its jewelry from American manufacturers who provide certificates showing the metals in piercing jewelry they buy.

Piercing the fog of education budget wars

California’s perennial debate over how much it is and should be spending on its largest-in-the-nation public school system has escalated sharply this year as the state faces a whopping budget deficit and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposes – whether seriously or not is uncertain – to take a big bite out of the schools’ money to close it.

Piercing the fog of education budget warsThe educational establishment and its allies in the Democratic leadership of the Legislature are howling about the governor’s proposal that school spending be whacked by $4.8 billion from what the constitution otherwise would require it to be through the 2008-09 fiscal year.

Piercing the fog of education budget warsThe Democrats have vowed to block any budget that makes a substantial reduction in state school aid and the California Teachers Association and other school groups have resumed their high-decibel complaint that California’s per-pupil spending is already near the bottom of the states.

Piercing the fog of education budget warsRepublicans and other critics, meanwhile, complain that California is wasting much of its school money on bloated administration and ineffective, faddish educational nostrums. They cite the state’s near-bottom rankings in national educational achievement test scores.

In the midst of this debate, the Census Bureau on Tuesday issued an extremely detailed accounting of what states (and the District of Columbia) are spending on their schools. It undercuts the mantras being chanted by both of California’s warring political factions.

Unlike other statisticalcompilations about school spending, the Census Bureau’s report is based on hard numbers, is as up-to-date as such data can be (2005-06 fiscal year) and, most important, includes financing from all sources and spending on all categories, rather than the selective figures being batted around by others.

The Census Bureau report strongly refutes the oft-cited “fact” that California is near the bottom in per-pupil school spending. The national average was $9,138 in 2005-06. California was at $8,486, with New York the highest at $14,884 and Utah the lowest at $5,437 – one of 22 states, in fact, that fell below California’s level.

In terms of school revenues, California was 25th among the states at $10,264 per pupil, just under the national average. It was above average in per-pupil income from federal and state sources and about $1,700 per pupil below average in local revenues, thanks to Proposition 13, the 1978 property tax limit measure.

Overall, therefore, California isn’t nearly as deficient in school financing as the education establishment would have us believe. But neither is it wasting money on administrative overkill, as critics on the right contend. Its per-pupil spending on non-instructional “support services” was in fact, slightly below the national average at $3,050, although the sub-categories of overall and school site administration were a bit above average.

The most important aspect of the school spending reports, however, is that they underscore the truism that there’s very little correlation between the amount of money a state spends on public education and how its students fare in academic tests, dropout rates and other measures of educational performance.

California is second from the bottom, for example, in fourth-grade reading scores on national achievement tests, ahead only of Washington, D.C. But Washington is very near the top in per-pupil income and spending at $18,332 in revenue and $13,446 in spending. Conversely, many states nearer the bottom in per-pupil spending, including Utah, outrank California in test scores and other measures.

Money may be important, but it’s clearly not the only factor determining how well schools are educating children. We should be paying attention to what the kids need, not the political goals of adult warriors.

Exotic Ear Piercings

Ears can be pierced just about anywhere from the lower lobes to the thin rim that runs around the entire shell of the ear. Modern piercing techniques allow for easy piercing and more successful healing, especially for cartilage piercings. In order to distinguish one type of ear cartilage piercing from another, a wide array of new piercing names were born.

Exotic Ear PiercingsThe ear is the part of the body that is the most accepting of the "if it protrudes, pierce it" school of piercing. Many individual parts of the ear can be pierced and healed successfully. In the picture shown here, the red letters indicate the location of a wide variety of ear piercing variations.

Exotic Ear Piercings
A - Anti-tragus - This piercing is through the thicker cartilage piece adjacent the tragus, attached to the rim of the ear. multiple ear piercings

C - Conch - also, conk. This term refers to any piercing through either the inner or outer shell of the ear.

D - Daith - This inner ear cartilage piercing is just above the opening into the ear canal. The name comes from the Hebrew word meaning "wisdom."

H - Helix - Outer cartilage ridge piercings. This is a popular location for multiple rings, which can be set around the rim, or through the ridge itself.

L - Lobes, stretched - These are bigger gauge holes, usually lower down on the lobe. The smaller the jewelry gauge number, the larger the hole. Jewelry for these can be like tiny tubes or plugs and go up to about an inch and a half in the more commonly found largest sizes. Authentic, tribal jewelry is wearable in these sizes with elaborate, hand-carved pieces crafted from materials such as bone, stone or wood.

R - Rook - These ear piercings goes through the stiff ridge in the fold of the shell of the ear.

T - Tragus - This piercing is through the cartilage chunk just next to the opening of the ear canal. If you are fond of ear bud style head phones, be careful how you set this piercing, as placement deeper into the tissue or a larger gauge ring can interfere with how the buds seat themselves in the ear conch.

Exotic Ear PiercingsAn Industrial is when multiple ear piercings are aligned so that one piece of jewelry, usually a barbell, is worn through the two holes. Helix piercings are easily paired this way, especially when the piercings are done specifically for this purpose but any two adjacent piercings that can be comfortabley connected will work. This style has also been called an Ear Orbit when it is done so that a ring is worn through the two holes.

A Transverse piercing runs across the length of the lobe, rather than through it, like a surface piercing on the ear. Placement of this unique piercing usually works best on the lower lobe where the tissue is both flat and flexible.

Body Piercing: It’s All About Attitude

A tiny blonde with blue eyes and baggy blue slacks sits inside Painless Steel Tattoo and Body Piercing waiting to have her belly button pierced.

Body Piercing It’s All About AttitudeAmanda Mundt hopes to start stripping at the Fox Club in Missoula next month. A piercing will accentuate her look, she says.

Body Piercing It’s All About AttitudeBouncing down Painless Steel’s black, red and white checkerboard floor, Mundt passes through a red door and says, “I can do this.”

Body Piercing It’s All About AttitudeShe pulls up her shirt exposing a flat, pale belly. One of the shop’s piercers, Anna Burns, charts the needle’s trajectory with a purple pen. A tattoo needle’s high-pitched whine from the next room accompanies Mundt’s deep breaths.

Burns hovers above, wielding a thin silver needle between latex-covered fingers.

As the needle penetrates, Mundt’s breathing stops. She exhales deeply. The needle slides through the top of the navel’s upper lid and exits with a glint.

Burns plucks a pink barbell tipped with a cubic zirconium from a clear anti-bacterial solution and slides it through Mundt’s newly perforated navel.

The modern body-piercing trend in Missoula, if this Saturday afternoon is any indicator, is all about attitude.

“I want to piss off my mom,” said 20-year-old University of Montana student Julia Berkshire. She’s about to have the holes in her ears stretched to accommodate thicker jewelry. With gradual stretching, a pierced ear can become a nickel-sized window. “I’m sick of people thinking I’m just a girl. I’m tough.”

There are thousands of reasons to pierce the body, said James Weber, medical liaison for the Association of Professional Piercers.

“It’s sort of like asking someone why they wear the clothes they wear,” he said.

Body piercing is an ancient practice. Nose, tongue, ear and lip piercing all trace their roots back thousands of years through African, Aztec, Indian and Mayan civilizations. The Nez Perce, or “nose pierced,” were named so by the French because of the piercings worn by Indians. Warrior cultures over the years have embraced septum piercing, inserting thick pieces of bone, gold and jade into nose cartilage, which commanded a fierce presence on the battlefield.

For decades, piercings faded into the cultural background before resurfacing in the modern era.

Later, the American gay underground began toying with body jewelry. By the mid ‘80s, leather-clad street kids in European and American urban centers began sticking safety pins into sneering lips and furrowed brows. The accessory of rebellion was born.

The most common piercings, Burns said, are the nose and belly button, but she sees a lot of genitalia piercings too.

“I’ve done six or seven in the last week,” she said.

Once the mark of an outcast, Generation Y loves its metal.

“Now it’s weird if you don’t have it,” said Marin Addis, from behind the counter at Painless Steel.

It’s tough to gauge how many folks are pierced or who’s doing the piercing. Hairdressers, nail technicians and hipsters with needles, pierce for cash and for fun.

“That’s a big problem in the industry,” said Weber of the Association of Professional Piercers. “No one knows how many people are being pierced.”

In 2001, a Mayo Clinic poll conducted on New York college students reported that 51 percent had at least one body piercing. And a 2006 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that 14 percent of people nationwide between the ages of 18-50 had a body piercing.

Even under the best conditions, medical complications arise, said dermatologist Amy Derick, who conducted the 2006 study. According to the poll, 24 percent of piercees had some sort of complication. Infection is not uncommon, and nearly a quarter of people with either a mouth or lip piercing reported breaking or chipping a tooth as a result.

Ashley Hutchinson quietly looks at the blue and pink nose rings in Painless Steel’s glass case.

“I’m such a wimp. I’m so scared,” she said. Her mother pierced her belly button, but it got infected, probably because of cheap jewelry, she said. Eventually the ring fell out. But with her brother’s encouragement and money (he’s paying for her new nose ring) she’s ready to try again.

“I’ve got all these horror stories in my head, like it will get infected and my nose will fall off,” Hutchinson said.

Piercing regulations vary from state to state. In Montana, no certification is required.

Painless Steel piercer Anna Burns has been at it for about six months and Paul Champion from Altered Skin Tattoo and Body Piercing for nearly 25 years. Both shops require blood-born pathogen and CPR training before a piercer goes to work.

While many of the folks at Painless Steel this Saturday afternoon are first-timers, it’s not unusual to see people with five, 10 or even 20 pieces of titanium imbedded in their skin. And as the trend spreads, it’s branching out.

“You’re just going to see more extremes,” Champion says.

If plain piercing isn’t enough, suspensions, or people hanging from their piercings, are becoming popular too. Folks are increasingly sticking finger-sized hooks into chest, leg and back piercings in order to hang from trees and poles.

Suspension in America today, like piercing, is largely a legacy of Native culture. The Sioux Indians used horn pegs and rawhide to suspend themselves during the annual Sun Dance Ritual.

Often, the ritual would take place over several days until hooks were ripped free. The pain and release cycle was thought to regenerate and bring practitioners closer to a higher power.

“The Sun Dance ritual is dedicated to God. In modern suspension, we do it for ourselves,” said Emryst Yetz from Rights of Passage, a multi-state organization dedicated to the practice.

Suspensions are largely about claiming one’s body and asserting individuality. But they are also, at times, as much about performance as transcendence.

Back at Painless Steel, Mundt leaps off of the piercer’s chair and dances in front of a wall-length mirror.

“I’m going to be a stripper,” she sings. “My grandfather would be turning over in his grave.”

Permission for piercing

A Geelong piercing operator is backing plans to ban intimate piercings for under-18s, as the State Government calls for public comment on the proposal.

Acting Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls yesterday announced the Government would seek community input on the proposed legislation banning intimate body piercings on people under the age of 18.

Permission for piercingThe legislation would also require parental consent for non-intimate body piercing on people under the age of 16.

Permission for piercingMr Hulls said feedback from young people, the body art industry, community groups, health practitioners and parents was important for shaping the legislation.

Permission for piercingFor local piercing operator Geoff Polley, who owns Body Pleasure Piercing in Little Malop St, the bans can’t come soon enough.

“It’s a brilliant idea,” he said.

“It’s something we’ve been trying to get for years and years.”

Mr Polley said yesterday he had been calling for these laws for more than a decade and said they would be welcomed by most people in the piercing industry.

He said his business already had a policy of not performing intimate piercings, such as genital piercings, on people under the age of 18; as well as requiring parental permission for any kind of piercing for under-16s.

But he said many young teenagers still came in wanting intimate piercings.

He said having laws to back up his policy would make life much easier for him and many other piercing operators.

Mr Hulls said yesterday tattooing and body piercing was becoming increasingly popular and the Victorian Government had an obligation to protect community health and welfare, especially of the young.

“The proposed reforms are designed to involve parents and guardians in discussions and decision-making with young people about body piercing,” he said.

“Our concern is the safety of minors.

“The possible health implications associated with body piercing can include the transmission of blood-borne viruses, infection, scarring and nerve damage.”
